THE QUICK ANSWER
At a glance
- Use the current reward chart for the airlines and travel zones in your itinerary.
- A mixed itinerary needs its own quote; separate segment prices are only research.
- An eligible stopover is a deliberate itinerary choice with additional rules and points.
- Compare fare options, partner booking charges and cancellation conditions before transferring.
What can you book with Aeroplan points?
Aeroplan is the loyalty program associated with Air Canada, and its points can be used for flight rewards on Air Canada and eligible partners. This makes it worth considering for a trip that never touches Canada as well as one through a Canadian hub. The useful question is whether Aeroplan can ticket your actual journey, rather than whether Air Canada operates the aircraft.
Begin with the full trip: departure airport, destination, cabin and how many people need seats. A single available business-class seat does little for a family that must travel together. If you can leave from several airports, compare the total trip cost, including the expense and reliability of reaching an alternate gateway.
Read the chart before judging a points price
Aeroplan's flight reward chart uses travel zones and distance bands, with conditions that depend on the operating airlines. Air Canada's own rewards can vary in points. Do not assume that every partner or every combination of airlines uses an identical fixed-price rule: consult the current chart notes for the itinerary you are building.
A detour can change the distance traveled and therefore the relevant band. A connection that seems geographically minor can also change the set of carriers involved. Search the complete itinerary and compare its final price with a simpler route; adding the prices of independently available flights is a planning exercise, not proof Aeroplan will issue one ticket at that sum.
Plan a stopover as part of the ticket
Aeroplan supports eligible international stopovers through its Multi-city/Stopover search or contact centre. A stopover is a planned stay in an intermediate city, rather than simply choosing the shortest connection. The reward policy sets limits on location, duration and routing, and additional points apply. Check those conditions before planning hotels around a multi-city idea.
The official flight reward policy sets the conditions for building a stopover journey. Availability on each segment still needs to combine into a permitted reward. Review the complete itinerary and its fare conditions before paying for accommodation around an intermediate stop; a route that can be drawn on a map still needs to satisfy Aeroplan's booking and routing rules.
How to book an Aeroplan flight reward
After locating a candidate in AwardTool, confirm it at aircanada.com or in the Air Canada app. Select the points option and use the account that will make the booking.
Recreate the journey
Search the complete route for the correct passenger count. Use Multi-city/Stopover when your plans require an eligible stopover, rather than hoping to add one after ticketing.
Compare reward options
Read the cabin on every flight and the fare option attached to the quote. Evaluate points and cash together, including applicable partner booking charges and the rules for changes or refunds.
Fund and finish
If transferring eligible rewards, check the provider's current terms and confirm the reward again before moving points. Finish payment and verify ticket issuance for each traveler.
Review mixed cabins and U.S. transfer funding
Aeroplan's current policy says mixed-cabin rewards are priced using the highest class of service in each direction, and courtesy upgrades are not permitted to fill the lower-cabin portions. This makes the segment details important: a business-class heading does not promise business class on the intercontinental flight. The policy also distinguishes change and cancellation charges by reward fare and servicing channel.
The Points Guy's September 14, 2026 guide covers multiple U.S. transferable-rewards routes to Aeroplan. Check the issuer's current list for your exact account, including rate, increment and processing time, before moving points. A transfer bonus affects the funding calculation but does not alter the flight's availability or fare conditions. Choose the complete itinerary and reward option first, then use the final quote to establish the required balance.
Common questions
Do I have to fly through Canada to use Aeroplan?
No. Aeroplan offers rewards on its airline partners as well as Air Canada. Availability and routing must still qualify under Aeroplan's rules.
Does an award on another Star Alliance site prove Aeroplan can book it?
No. Use another program's results as a lead, then verify the exact itinerary with Aeroplan. Programs can show different inventory and use different pricing rules.
