The September 2026 change older comparisons miss
Frequent Miler's September 5, 2026 coverage explains Flying Blue's new Light, Standard and Flex award fares. Flying Blue's official reward page confirms the September introduction on Air France and KLM and says tickets issued before September 8 retain their previous conditions. That distinction matters when reading a review based on an older booking.
Flying Blue says Promo pricing now corresponds to Light. Its reward page states that Light excludes checked baggage in Economy and Premium and does not permit changes or refunds, with an exception for Platinum and Ultimate members. A low advertised mileage price therefore needs to be read with the traveler's fare and status conditions.
Compare the award product as well as its miles price
Frequent Miler reports that Air France and KLM awards booked through partners such as Virgin Atlantic are treated as Standard bookings. Check the actual ticket's baggage and change conditions rather than assuming a Flying Blue Light quote and a partner award provide identical benefits.
| Question | Flying Blue | Virgin Atlantic Flying Club |
|---|---|---|
| Air France or KLM fare | Identify Light, Standard or Flex | Check the conditions of the partner-issued reward |
| Lowest promotional price | Promo price is Light under current rules | Do not assume Flying Blue's promotion transfers to Virgin |
| KLM award pricing | Read the current itinerary quote | Consult Virgin's applicable partner chart and travel dates |
| Cash component | Taxes and carrier surcharges are paid separately | Partner awards also require taxes, fees and surcharges |
| Changes and refunds | Depend on fare, status and ticket issue date | Read Virgin's rules for this reward and operating airline |
Separate Virgin-operated awards from partner awards
Virgin's reward-seat page describes variable points prices on its own flights. Its KLM partner page instead publishes distance and zone tables with peak and off-peak categories. A low Virgin-operated London award is not a published rate for an Air France or KLM-operated flight, even when both trips arrive in the same city.
Virgin's current KLM page also limits KLM reward bookings to 300 days before departure. That is a specific published partner restriction, rather than a general release window for every airline in either program. An earlier-date search can therefore be inconclusive without establishing that the two programs will offer the same flights when both can sell them.
How to compare an Air France or KLM flight
Search the same itinerary for the whole party and record each operating flight, cabin and connection. On Flying Blue, open the available fare choices. On Virgin, establish whether the identical flights are available and inspect the partner reward terms. Keep miles and cash in separate columns; convert currencies consistently before comparing cash charges.
Match the inclusions
Compare checked baggage, changes and refund eligibility. If you need a checked bag or might cancel, keep those requirements with the fare being evaluated.
Check deadlines
Flying Blue's contact guidance says changes or cancellation must be requested before the latest check-in limit and that ticket conditions determine fees. For Virgin, consult the applicable reward rules and its cancellation deadline.
Recheck before funding
Confirm the current quote and required traveler count on the issuing program's website. Inspect the bank's transfer ratio and available bonus separately; an airline's award promotion is not a bank transfer bonus.
Common questions
Does every Flying Blue award have the same cancellation rule?
No. Current Air France and KLM rewards have Light, Standard and Flex conditions, with status exceptions and different treatment for tickets issued before September 8, 2026.
Is a Flying Blue Promo Reward equivalent to a Virgin partner award?
Not automatically. Flying Blue identifies current Promo pricing with Light, while Frequent Miler reports partner-issued Air France and KLM awards receive Standard treatment. Compare the ticket conditions.
Does Virgin use one award chart for every flight?
No. Virgin's own reward seats have variable pricing, while partner pages such as KLM provide their own charts, availability limits and rules.
