American AAdvantage guide: miles, partner awards and how to book

AAdvantage is American Airlines' loyalty program. Its miles can buy flights on American and eligible partner airlines, but the operating airline, award availability and final cash charges all affect the booking decision.

THE QUICK ANSWER

At a glance

  • American-operated awards and partner awards follow different pricing references.
  • Search the whole journey and the actual passenger count before choosing an award.
  • A partner selling a cash seat does not establish AAdvantage award availability.
  • Confirm cancellation eligibility, cash charges and ticket issuance with American.

What is American AAdvantage?

AAdvantage is the loyalty program used by American Airlines. Redeemable miles are the balance you spend on eligible awards. Keep the redemption decision separate from earning elite status: a large mileage balance does not by itself explain which airport benefits you will receive. For an award trip, start with where your miles are held and which program will issue the ticket.

American publishes separate information for awards on its own flights and awards on oneworld and other partners. That distinction matters when comparing the same destination. A flight operated by a partner may be booked with American miles when American has access to an eligible award seat; you do not need to move those miles into the operating airline's program.

Understand American prices and partner availability

American's own flight-award page describes starting values rather than a guaranteed price for every departure. The actual mileage requirement appears during a search. Use adjacent dates to establish whether your preferred flight is unusually expensive, and compare a connection with a nonstop only after accounting for the extra time involved.

For partner trips, read the partner award chart and its route-specific exceptions. Do not infer the price of a complicated routing simply from the two endpoints. American's partner page notes that a one-way journey with two long-haul international flights can require two awards. If the itinerary looks surprising, ask American to explain the award construction before committing miles.

How to book a flight with AAdvantage miles

Use AwardTool to discover suitable dates and itineraries, then reproduce the selected journey with American. Treat the airline's final booking page as the decision point.

  1. Search with miles

On American's website or app, choose the option to redeem miles. Enter the complete origin, destination, dates and traveler count. Start with a one-way search when you want to compare outbound options clearly.

  2. Inspect the operating flights

Check the airline and cabin on every segment, including a domestic connection. Record flight numbers and local dates so you can distinguish an overnight arrival from an extra hotel night.

  3. Review the total and ticket

Sign in to the account spending the miles, confirm names and required cash payment, and finish the booking. Verify that the confirmation includes an issued ticket rather than assuming a saved itinerary is ready for travel.

Check taxes, cancellation and the return journey

Compare the complete cash component, especially when choosing among partner airlines. A lower mileage quote can lose its appeal once fees, a positioning flight or an overnight connection are included. Use the cash fare you would realistically purchase as your benchmark; a premium fare you would never buy can exaggerate the apparent savings.

Before paying, read the rules for the exact ticket and note the deadline for cancellation. American's program terms distinguish wholly unused awards from partially used or expired tickets. If you later need help with an AAdvantage-issued partner award, start with American for ticket changes and ask for the partner booking reference when arranging seats with the operating airline.

Funding an AAdvantage account from the United States

The Points Guy's July 6, 2026 program guide covers earning through flights, credit cards and eligible partners, including Citi ThankYou transfers. Check the current transfer menu of your own rewards account rather than assuming any card issued by the same bank has identical access or conversion terms. A supported transfer destination is different from buying a ticket through a bank travel portal.

Before a transfer, check the account name, AAdvantage number, conversion rate, minimum increment and processing estimate. Verify the award again and confirm how much of your existing miles balance can be used. If the desired itinerary cannot be priced by American, moving more points does not establish availability. Keep the flight numbers, dates and passenger count ready if an official agent needs to investigate the booking.

Common questions

Can I use American miles on British Airways or Qatar Airways?

American lists both as redemption partners. The flight must have award inventory available to AAdvantage, and American's quoted mileage, routing rules and cash charges apply.

Why is an American award more expensive on my preferred date?

American displays the applicable mileage requirement during booking. Its published starting values do not promise that price for every flight. Compare nearby days, nearby airports and the cost of a paid ticket.
